I've been in the Minecraft community for years! Something I've always been fascinated with at the beginning is the idea of Herobrine, that one (looking back at it now) crappy Steve resprite that just has blank eyes. I first learned about it through patch notes back when I had my XBOX 360, and whenever I could, I got on my dad's computer to look up videos about who this guy was, ranging from edited cinematics to mod showcases that claimed to being him into your world. Needless to say, I was hooked!
Fast forward some years, and a new mod pops up called From The Fog. It's a mod that hasn't been done in a while; One that once again adds Herobrine to the game. I was surprised that hasn't been done in years, and I was excited to try it out!
It was kinda boring! All he did was just stand there and look at you from time to time (and maybe some other details from the original creepypasta, like trees without leaves). It was a huge letdown, and I wanted more out of what the idea could bring. This was also around the time when dweller-style mods were making the rounds and I didn't like them either because they're mostly the same thing but with a different coat of paint. Heck, looking back at old Minecraft horror mods, I can say that a lot of them were also boring. So what caused me to have a different outlook on them? Spoilers: It's because I find them kinda fun to laugh about!
I feel like I should also start poking fun at another Minecraft horror mod from around the same time as the original Herobrine mod: The John Mod. It adds 3 tiers of John to the game, being small, medium, and large. They're hard to kill (or at least medium and large are, as the small ones don't do damage) but drop gems that can be used to make weapons and armor (two purposes for things, nice job!). But looking back at it, I'm surprised people found Johns scary. They kind of look like an enemy from The Binding Of Isaac (especially Mr. Maws) but drawn in MS Paint.
The old Herobrine mod at the time is a bit more interesting, as you actually have to summon him, but it quickly becomes annoying when he floods the chat, starts rain, and randomly teleports.
Yeah, I don't really know how to expand on this discussion. Sorry if you were expecting more, but I'm done with this part. If you like the stuff I've mentioned, then great! More power to you. But I just find it funny how this stuff was seen as the pinnacle of horror back then.
